The skipper on one of our boats told us the best weather for going through the mountains, is the WORST WEATHER possible. We always try to uphold the highest standards, and yesterday we came through. It was our first day of rain, heavy rain. That meant that there were waterfalls of every type coming down off the hillsides; trickles, misty, and powerful gushing waterfalls. We had our rain jackets and "one umbrella" (mine was hidden away in my suitcase), to pull out for four quick bush walks through to the chosen waterfalls: Blue Pools,

Fantail, Thunder Creek, and Roaring Billy. Equally amazing on the walks to see the waterfalls, is the thick, deep green foliage of ferns, fern trees, fuschia trees, beach trees, various other trees, and, "The Bush." Steve and Dave also did a swamp walk, where Steve saw the tallest tree in NZ, a Kahikatea tree. (I chose to stay warm in the car and read a bit more of Texas Monthly.) We did a short walk to see the Fox Glacier. I don't know if Greta will be home for Christmas or not. A large beech tree took a very strong liking to her.
